Be able to loop the same line over and over, or go from one line to the next, or go from one line to the previous one, all without stopping. |

Today's lesson focus was to build the chords in the chart that has the annotations. Goal was also to create well balanced chords, well distributed and with nice voicings. Next goal is to work on the scales that are deducted form each of the chords. The SCALE WORKSHEET below has two versions, a blank one and one with scale ideas. Feel free to write your own scale and chord ideas on the black one. Assignment. Improv: Create a "composed improvisation" that goes through the scales. You can write it down, or you can create it on the spot, but I warn you it will be difficult to improvise on these chords without having prepared them with full purpose ahead of time. I recommend to compose an improvisation which you can play as is or deviate from it as you wish. Assignment. Listening: Listen to the solo by Dexter Gordon and follow it reading the transcription posted on the right margin. Right now it is manuscript. As soon as I can I will typeset it and poste the typeset. SCALE WORKSHEET. Clean and with ideas

Learn the chart to understand the tune better. This version is by Jim Hall (guitar) and Michel Petrucciani (piano). The piano solo is filled with great scales and turns for a fun transcription.
To your right you will find the video from YouTube and below this paragraph is the audio of the solo in case you want to transcribe it using Voice Recorder Pro and slow it down. Piano solo starts at 3:50. The audio player starts at the solo and you can download it to slow it down with the app. Below is the chart from the Real Book, and an exercise sheet I give to students to write down the scales you would use for each chord.
