LESSON NOTES

2025. February 18

Chopin Op. 10 Nr.5 (Cortot Edition)
Today, we discussed managing activities within the performance calendar and selecting the ones that best align with your goals.
Repertoire Focus:
Chopin – Etude Op. 10, No. 5
Key Points Discussed:
  • Tempo and Musicality: Emphasized playing at a comfortable tempo to allow the mind to focus on musicality rather than just managing notes.
  • Practicing in Uncomfortable Environments: Explored the importance of being adaptable and learning to perform well even when conditions are not ideal.
  • Performing Without Warm-Up: Discussed strategies for playing confidently without the benefit of prior warm-up.
  • Performance Mindset: Considered where the mind should be during a performance—focusing on phrasing, bringing out voices, telling a story, and shaping the music rather than micromanaging every note.
  • Recovery Techniques: Addressed how to react when something goes wrong in a performance. You did an excellent job recovering from small mishaps.
  • Phrasing and Intention: Worked on beginning phrases with clear intention and incorporating breath before starting.
  • Difficult Passage Management: Encouraged slowing down challenging passages and gradually increasing speed to build confidence and control.
  • Crescendo Management:
    • Left hand: Prioritizing the bass, allowing it to lead the crescendo while keeping chordal balance.
    • Right hand: Highlighting the bell tones that are essential to the passage's character.
Great progress today! Keep up the dedicated work. Looking forward to next week’s session.

2025. February 4

Chopin Op. 10 Nr.5 (Cortot Edition)
• Wrist Relaxation & Flexibility: Emphasized a lighter touch to maintain speed and natural flow without unnecessary tension.
• Left Hand Agility & Clarity: Needs to be more precise and articulate.
• Pedal Control: Follow the score’s indications while prioritizing clarity and allowing the music to “breathe.”
• Voicing of Left-Hand Chords: Ensure clarity and balance in chordal sections.
• Ending (Measure 78): Addressed tension; octaves should be practiced by grouping notes into a single impulse with rebounds, rather than multiple consecutive impulses.
• Breathing in Phrasing (Beginning): Encouraged natural phrasing by incorporating hand lifts for breath; if insecure, lifting the elbow while keeping fingers on the keys is an alternative approach.

Scales.  Levine Curriculum Level FIVE.

Jazz chart reading and improvisation

NOVEMBER 19
Our first lesson on this will be with the tune "I Could Write a Book"
  • How to build and place (voicing) the chords
  • How to relate chords to scales for improvisation
  • How to build a bass using the structural notes of the chords
  • How to arrange a song so you can play the melody and chords on the RH and bassoon the LH.

Learning tunes

Preparing a "tune".  Mapping the territory:
  • Learning the melody with the RH
  • RH plays the melody, LH plays the bass only (single note)
  • Learning the chords with the LH. Chords placed around middle C. Use inversions to minimize motion between chords
  • LH plays Bass, then chord as half notes or as quarter notes. RH Plays the melody

Preparing a "tune".  Starting to improvise:
  • Improvising by playing a very close variation of the melody
  • Improvising on the chords (chord outlining)
  • Improvising by matching scales to the chords. Requires harmonic analysis of the piece.

Accompanying a "tune".  Chord reduction in 3 and 7. "How High the Moon"
  • Reducing the LH chords from 1 - 3 - 5 - 7 - to 3 - 7
  • Keeping the chords around middle CP{practicing by playing LH chords, RH melody and LH bass, RH chords
Tunes for practice.  In the key of C
